SOLD OUT! Rain Barrel Workshop (4/20/2024)

Collecting rainwater in a barrel can save you money during the dry seasons and reduce the demand on your well or save your water bill. With a roof of 1,000 square feet, an inch of water can generate 600 gallons of water.

Rain barrels are about 41 inches high and 20 inches around. Please make arrangements to take yours home after the class.

Target ages: Adults and teens. Must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or older.

Cost: $75

Note: Power tools will be used in this workshop. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult for this workshop.

Pay by check, cash or money order payable to PMGA (Portsmouth Master Gardeners Association). We cannot take credit cards for this event. You may also drop off your registration and payment at the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the address below.

Early Bird Greenhouse Plant Sale

This is your opportunity to get an early start on your garden. PMGA will be selling vegetables and flowers from the Greenhouse. The last average frost date for our area is April 15th, so you can plant anytime after that date.

Our selection includes:
Vegetables; tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers
Flowers; zinnias, butterfly weed, marigolds, and more.

December Garden Talk: Creating a Wildlife Habitat

This lecture will include information on the elements needed to attract wildlife in the backyard garden. Learn how to construct a habitat for birds, bees, and other small creatures. We will
discuss different types of bird feeders and the food that attracts different birds. Lists of favorite food sources will be provided.
Come and learn how much fun and beneficial creating a wildlife habitat can be.

With our annual Open Garden & Plant Sale, we invite you to check out our display gardens, ask the Plant Doctor any questions you have about gardening, and attend demos and talks on gardening topics. Remember to take home some plants for your garden! Annuals and perennials, flowers, fruits, herbs, vegetables and shrubs will all be available. You can also get your small garden tools sharpened for a small fee.
